Diary
Monday, 17 February
1985
- Bobby Robson has slapped a one-match ban on both
Southampton's Mark Wright and Arsenal's Steve Williams. They were both left out
of the squad that should haveᵍᵃthered at Bisham Abbey last month after much
publicised rows with Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy. As it was, the weather
intervened and the get-together was cancelled. Also missing out is Peter
WIthe, as well as Mark Chamberlain, Steve Hunt and Clive Allen. However,
Williams' teammate at Arsenal, Tony Woodcock, has been included in the squad,
despite him walking out on his manager, Don Howe, when he was axed. Back in
contention come Alan Kennedy, Glenn Hoddle, Paul Mariner, Mark Hateley andGary
Lineker, along with the uncappedGary Stevens, of Everton, and Chris Waddle, who
has impressed Robson with his form this season.

- Bobby Robson had his birthday celebrations cut
short when he heard that his skipper Bryan Robson has pulled out of the squad.
Robson, 52 yesterday, was stunned as he thought that the younger Robson had
shaken off his shoulder injury which originally made him doubtful, and it is in
fact a new injury that forces the midfielder to miss his eleventh game since
Robson took command. The player went over on his ankle last Thursday and it has
not responded to treatment. He was replaced in the squad by Everton's
Trevor Steven, who has been promoted from the under-21 squad.
