Diary
Monday, 5 November 1984
- Bobby Robson will take every precaution to cover
his Italian connection when his squad fly to Turkey on Sunday from Luton
Airport. Mark Hateley, Trevor Fancis and Ray Wilkins will be playing for their
respective Italian clubs that afternoon. So Robson is taking no chances and he
took full advantage of the new FIFA rule which allows him to name as many
players as he wants when he selected 23 players today and provided cover by
naming Paul Mariner, who is currently injured, and Peter Withe.
Monday, 12 November 1984
- Peter Withe has a golden opportunity to resurrect
his England career in Istanbul on Wednesday. The big striker will fill the
number nine shirt in the wake of Bobby Robson's double blow. The shock news that
Mark Hateley is out with a severe knee injury followed the news of Paul
Mariner's reluctance to travel. Robson tried for twenty minutes to persuade the
Arsenal man to join the squad, but he refuses to make the trip because of aᵍᵃsh
on his head.
