substitute notes: Trevor Francis becomes the second player, after Tony Woodcock, to make a record nine appearances as an England substitute. At the same time, the player he replaced, Tony Woodcock, equals Trevor Brooking's record of being replaced by a substitute on nine separate occasions.
Steve Williams becomes the 25th England player to be replaced by a substitute and never play for the senior side again.
records: Bryan Robson is the third different captain to score a hattrick, after Gilbert Smith and Vivian Woodward. Woodward managed the feat four times, the last in 1909, making this the sixth hattrick by a Captain.

    Match Report by Norman Giller

Bryan Robson became the first England captain since Vivian Woodward back in 1909 to score a hat-trick as Turkey were steam-rollered to defeat in this World Cup qualifier. John Barnes and Tony Woodcock collected two goals apiece, and Viv Anderson scored the first of his two goals for England.  It was England's most emphatic overseas victory since the 10-0 tanking of the United States in 1964. Even Bobby Robson escaped criticism.
