All information is
complete to and including England's last match, the fifth of the 1984-85 season,
against Republic of Ireland on 26 March 1985.
Diary
Monday, 13 May 1985
- Chelsea striker Kerry Dixon has been given a month
to show Bobby Robson that he can score goals at all levels. Dixon has been named
today in place of Arsenal's Paul Mariner in the 22-man squad for England's
upcoming matches over the next month. It is almost certain that he will play in
one of the matches as he understudies Mark Hateley. The 6ft 13st. striker has
earned his place purely because he has scored 36 First Division goals this
season, as Robson has yet to see him play. But it was with some reluctance that
Robson finally dispensed with Mariner, who showed in the previous match against
Romania that he is just a little short on pace nowadays. Also axed is Mariner's
teammate, Steve Williams, who has put cast aside by the dramatic emergence of
Everton duo Peter Reid and Paul Bracewell, who were brought in as cover for
Bryan Robson and Ray Wilkins. The selection of the strong Everton contingent
brings added problems and if the FA Cup Final, to be played on Saturday, should
go a replay on Thursday, all Everton and Manchester United players will be
unavailable. That is why the manager has taken the unusual step of naming four
standby players--Ricky Hill, Mick Harford, Steve Hodge, and the aforementioned
Steve Williams--. There are further complications with Sampdoria and AC Milan
demanding the release of Trevor Francis, Ray Wilkins and Mark Hateley for their
cup competition
Saturday, 26 April 1985
- Alan Kennedy has withdrawn from the squad because of an injury.
Sunday, 27 April 1985 - The England squad meet up
ahead of their clash with Romania on Wednesday. Before the squad leaves, Hateley
has withdrawn, to be replaced by Luther Blissett.
