Defences dominated in a drab goalless draw in which both teams wasted  scoring chances. Veteran press box observers could not remember an auld enemy match so lacking in passion and and excitement. The topic became the old chestnut of whether there was too much football, leaving players jaded at the end of the season. Brazil beat Scotland 2-0 on the same Hampden Park pitch three days later to take the Rous Cup.
