England worked at trying to perfect their much-vaunted Christmas Tree formation introduced amid huge media interest by Terry Venables. But there was nothing to suggest it made them any more potent against an uninspired United States team unable to find the form that had brought them huge support in the World Cup finals. One of the few encouraging things was the powerhouse performance of two-goal Alan Shearer, who was always too much of a handful for the overworked American defence. Barry Venison made a satisfactory debut in the first of his two England appearances.
