Club Career

Club(s) A prolific goalscorer and captain for his school teams, as well as Newcastle City schoolboys team, Shearer then joined the infamous Wallsend Boys' Club FC, from where he had several trials, Newcastle United FC, West Bromwich Albion FC and Manchester City FC, but it was Southampton FC that were successful in signing Shearer as an associate schoolboy in August 1984, during which time he also turned out for Cramlington Juniors FC. Shearer became a Southampton FC YTS trainee in April 1986. Then, after a hat-trick against Arsenal on his full league debut, 9 April 1988, he signed a professional contract with the Saints. At the same time, Newcastle United FC had made their first approach for Shearer, attempting to coax him back to his native hometown. Shearer remained with the south coast club, building up his reputation and goal tally. Following interest from Manchester United FC, again from Newcastle United FC and even Olympique Marseille, Shearer joined Premiership new club, Blackburn Rovers FC in July 1992 for 3.3 million, turning down Alex Ferguson attempts.
