David Kelly
goal had put the Republic a goal in front when the notorious hooligan
element among England's supporters started a riot that was such a danger
to the peaceful majority that the referee was forced to abandon the game
after twenty-seven minutes. This was the first away match of the
Terry Venables reign, and he joined in the chorus of criticism of the
behaviour of a small, but spiteful minority of fans who were dragging the
name of English football into the gutter. All the players were awarded
caps for the unfinished match...
