Match Report

Source Notes |
Romania's Dan Petrescu clinched a
90th minute winning goal to deliver a 2-1 victory over England in the World
Cup group G clash on Monday. Petrescu, who plays for Chelsea in
the English Premiership, shrugged off a tackle by his London team mate Graeme
Le Saux to push the ball past England goalkeeper David Seaman.
Earlier teenager Michael Owen had
given England hope when he came off the substitutes' bench to score an
equaliser for in the 83rd minute.
After the game, coach Glenn Hoddle
held a relatively brief news conference at which he said his side should have
"punished" Romania more. He told journalists the team was
disappointed by the defeat, but not the performance.
The 18-year-old Owen, in only his
seventh appearance for England, rifled in his second goal when he shot home
from close range after a scramble following a cross from Alan Shearer. Romania had looked certain of going
through when they took the lead with a 47th minute goal created by the
quick-thinking of veteran midfielder Gheorghe Hagi and converted by striker
Viorel Moldovan. The goal left England floundering
after an evenly-balanced first half. It was Moldovan's 13th goal for his
country.
A throw-in on the right flank was
taken quickly and delivered to Hagi. The 33-year-old, in his 112th
international match for Romania, barely glanced over his shoulder as he
flicked it over his marker Sol Campbell. Moldovan, reacting faster than Tony
Adams, chested the ball into space and then hit a rising right-foot shot wide
of goalkeeper David Seaman's right hand.
The goal caught England cold
immediately after the interval and left Romania with the relatively
comfortable task of resisting their increasingly-desperate attacks. England played well in the opening
period when Hagi, after two early fouls, was cautioned. One effort by Paul
Scholes, tightly marked by Constantin Galca, was cleared off the line by
Gheorghe Popescu. A hooked shot by Teddy Sheringham
also went close, but Romania were more dangerous with Hagi pulling the strings
deftly in midfield. - BBC Sport.
