Diary

Sunday, 31 May 1998 - In La Manga Golf Complex, near Murcia, southern Spain. Six players must be culled from the Finals squad. "There was a notice on the board saying that Glenn had decided to talk to each player individually in his hotel room about the squad and his reasons for either picking them or leaving them out. A list of appointments was shown, beginning at 4pm with David Seaman. Thereafter, they would be held every five minutes and I was one of the last, at 6.15 pm. Gazza's appointment was scheduled for 5.15pm. Nobody at that stage really expected Gazza to be one of them, although the evidence on and off field was mounting against him. He was sitting on a terrace at the hotel, trying to get himself together. The word was that he had been drinking cans of lager - something to which he later admitted. Seeing him in this state, Paul Merson and I persuaded him to go down to the swimming pool to try and freshen himself up for his meeting with Glenn. He was not in a good state of mind, self-doubt besetting him. He steadied himself enough to go upstairs for his meeting at the appointed hour and John Gorman met him in the corridor, put an arm around him and forewarned him of the news Glenn was about to deliver, so Gazza was already upset when he heard it from the horse's mouth. It was all over in a minute apparently and, according to the reports that reached me down by the pool, Gazza went straight to his own room where he kicked out at the furniture, cutting his leg in the process. Within the hour, he and the other five dropped - Ian Walker, Phil Neville, Andy Hinchcliffe, Nicky Nutt and Dion Dublin - were on their way to the airport for a private flight home." - Addicted, Tony Adams
