All information is complete to
and including England's last match, the eighth of the 1998-99
season, against Sweden on 5 June 1999.
Diary
Friday, 28 May 1999 -
Kevin Keegan has recalled Manchester United sensation
Teddy Sheringham for the two Euro 2000 qualifiers next month in a widely
expected move. Sheringham returns to the national squad of 22 for the first time
since the World Cup in France last summer. His goals helped United complete
their treble and the 31 year old was instrumental in raising United to their
historic finish against Bayern Munich in the Nou Camp on Wednesday night.
All in all Keegan has included six players from the team hailed yesterday by
300,000 fans on an open top bus rude through the outskirts of Manchester.
The squad will train next week before meeting section leaders Sweden in a game
the English cannot afford to lose. Sweden hold a 2-1 win over the English from
last September and the game on June 5th is Keegan's first in charge since
confirming a three year deal to take on the leadership of the national squad
full time and leave Fulham. The same squad will travel to play Bulgaria in Sofia
on June 8th.
Saturday, 5 June 1999 -
England draw with Sweden 0-0. Paul Scholes is
sent-off early in the second half. David Beckham was removed on a
stretcher with an injury with 15 minutes to go after defender Martin Keown was
also replaced with a pulled hamstring. Graeme Le Saux was substituted at
half-time suffering with a virus.
Tuesday,
8 June 1999 - Kevin Keegan has drafted in
Kieron Dyer and Danny Mills. Graeme Le Saux has pulled out of the squad
after being unable to shake off his virus. David Beckham and Martin Keown
have both pulled out suffering with hamstring injuries.
