Diary

Monday, 15 May 2000 - Kevin Keegan names a 28-man squad for the preparatory friendly matches at Wembley Stadium against Brazil and the Ukraine.  It includes two players yet to make an England appearance, Richard Wright and Steven Gerrard.  A further three players have earned recalls after falling out of favour, although their inclusion was not surprising given the form they had displayed for their club sides.  Nick Barmby, who, through injury and loss of form, had not played for England since Glenn Hoddle's first match in charge, the World Cup qualifier against Moldova in September 1996, has turned in fine performances for Everton throughout the season.  Steve McManaman earned a recall following some brilliant play in Real Madrid's successful European Cup campaign.  And goalkeeper David James, whose only appearance had come against Mexico in March 1997 when he was with Liverpool, had consistently shone for Aston Villa.  It serves as the provisional European Championship squad.

Sunday, 21 May 2000 - As the squad gathers at Burnham Beeches, Jason Wilcox withdraws from the squad because he requires knee surgery to remove floating cartilage. He is replaced with Aston Villa's teenage prodigy, Gareth Barry, who has been promoted from the under-21 squad.

Friday, 19 May 2000 - Keegan has called up Malcolm Crosby, the Swindon Town FC manager, to be a scout for the England team during the upcoming Euro 2000. He joins Nigel Spackman, Kenny Swain and Mike Pejic.

Tuesday, 30 May 2000 - Ray Parlour suffers knee ligament damage in the score draw with Brazil. He is subsequently withdrawn from the squad, as well as Jamie Redknapp, who has also suffered with a recurrence of a knee injury that had sidelined him for four months earlier in the season.

Wednesday, 31 May 2000 - Keegan made his European Championship finals squad selection just before the Ukraine victory, but delays formalizing it until after the match, UEFA's deadline for filing squad lists is tomorrow, with four more players missing out, Aston Villa goalkeeper David James, West Ham United's Rio Ferdinand,  Kieron Dyer of Newcastle United, and Manchester United's Andrew Cole, who has an injured toe. Whereas Nick Barmby, Gareth Barry and Steven Gerrard all get the nod.

Saturday, 3 June 2000 - England defeat Malta in a MFA celebration match. WIth the exception of man of the match Nicky Barmby, Keegan admits that if England repeat this stuttering form in the Finals tournament, and early exit can be guaranteed. Debutant goalkeeper Richard Wright concedes two penalties, saving one of them. He then crucially denies them an injury-time equaliser. In a clash resembling a practice-match, Keown and Heskey both score as the home nation utilise their reserves - all eleven of them. Darren Debono later complains that Shearer should have been sent-off after the England skipper used his elbow and broke Debono's nose.

Monday, 5 June 2000 - FIFA President Sepp Blatter suggests moving England's Euro clash with Germany from Charleroi to allay safety fears.

Tuesday, 6 June 2000 - An awards panel that includes Kevin Keegan selects Sunderland's Kevin Phillips as the Carling Player of the Year.

Wednesday, 7 June 2000 - Gareth Southgate hands in a transfer request at Aston Villa.

Thursday, 8 June 2000 - Liverpool's Jamie Redknapp is attending the Steadman-Hawkins clinic in Colorado awaiting a verdict on further knee surgery.

Friday, 9 June 2000 - Ipswich Town, newly promoted to the Premiership, give £5 million pound rated golakeeper, Richard Wright, a 'sign or be sold' ultimatum.

Saturday, 10 June 2000 - As Euro 2000 begins, the England camp are forced to issue a statement revealing that Captain Alan Shearer has received a controversial anti-inflammatory injection to help recover from a knee injury.

Monday, 12 June 2000 - England's assualt on Euro 2000 suffers a severe setback when in an end to end encounter in Eindhoven they surrender a two goal lead and lose their opener 3-2 to a technically superior Portugal team playing football of touch and skill. Scholes and McManaman, latching on to crosses, have England ahead in 18 minutes but the threat of a comeback is all too evident with Rui Costa and Luis Figo repeatedly sweeping through an overworked midfield and a back-pedalling defence. Keegan's concern is the abuse hurled at Beckham, claiming it was the worst he had heard in football. Meanwhile, Germany come from behind to earn a draw with Romania.
