Diary

Friday, 13 September 2019 - The president of the BFU Borislav Mihaylov has sent an official letter to the UEFA General Secretary, Theodore Theodoridis, and to the chairman of the The FA, Greg Clarke expressing his indignation and disappointment following the public comments made by Gareth Southgate and the suggestions that the English players will be subject to racial abuse by the Bulgarian supporters in the upcoming European qualifier in Sofia next month. The BFU views such behavior as groundless, inappropriate and unnecessary prior to the important and exciting football game that Bulgarian fans have been looking to in the past year. We have not received any official information regarding discriminatory language used by a Bulgarian supporter at Wembley stadium;en if this were the case however, we believe that generalizations and the creation of needless tension by official members of the English team is absolutely unacceptable and in contradiction with the spirit of mutual respect and fair play, the core values of both UEFA and the BFU.

Wednesday, 25 September 2019 - Ten overseas players have been named for the qualification matches against Montenegro and England. They are Ivelin Popov (Rostov), Kiril Despodov (Cagliari), Strahil Popov (Kasmpash), Vasil Bozhikov (Slovan Bratislava), Simeon Slavchev (Karabakh), Georgi Kostadinov (Arsenal Tula), Bozhidar Kraev (Gilles Vicente), Georgi Sarmov (Chemnitz), Georgi Pashov (Ararat) and Kamen Hadzhiev (Akademia Puskas).

Friday, 29 September 2019 - Head Coach Krasimir Balakov has announced Bulgaria's extended squad, from the efbet League, bringing the total number of players expected to camp at the Boyana National Football Base to 24 on Sunday, 6 October.

Tuesday, 15 October 2019 - UEFA have confirmed four charges against the Bulgaria Football Union following the appalling scenes during last night's Euro 2020 qualification match. Twice the match was halted in the first half because of racist chanting, and an announcement was made. The Bulgarian fans also threw objects and disrupted the national anthem, as well as showing replays on the big screen. But the Football Association themselves have also been hit with two charges themselves. The English supporters booed the national anthem, as well as the FA providing 'insufficient number of travelling stewards'.

Tuesday, 29 October 2019 - Bulgaria have been ordered by UEFA
to play their next competitive home game behind closed doors, with a further match suspended for two years after the racist chanting which marred their match with England two weeks ago. The Bulgarian FA have also been fined €75,000. The sanction means that Bulgaria's qualifier against the Czech Republic on 17 November will be played behind closed doors.
It is understood UEFA only considered the match against England as a second offence following racist chanting during the home qualifier against Kosovo in June, even though Bulgaria were also sanctioned after a banner supporting Bulgarian national resistance was displayed during their match against Czech Republic in Prague. The BFU were further fined €10,000 for disturbances during the national anthem.
