Diary
Thursday,
13 March 2025, noon -
Head Coach Paolo Nicolato has announced his list of 24
players who have been invited to take part in Latvia's opening World Cup
qualification matches this month, against Andorra and England.
Captain Krister Tober and forward Robert Ulrick both miss out because of
injury, and Niks Sliede has received his first call-up to the
national team.
Sunday, 16 March 2025 -
The team gather at a camp in Spain for training.
Friday,
21 March 2025 - Andorra 0 Latvia 1
- Latvia defeated Andorra in the first game of the 2026 World Cup qualifying tournament in a tough and awkward battle.
Krišjānis Zviedris made his debut in the goal, as Raivis Jurkovskis reached the
fifty-cap milestone. For the first time, Denis Melnik started.
For the Latvians, it was rare to get close to the opponents' penalty area, but long passes and passes between the lines resulted
in little. The first goal-scoring opportunity in the 17th minute was for Andrei Ciganik, whose shot was blocked.
Again, in the 31st minute, Vladislavs Gutkovskis threatened the goal in a quick attack.
Roberts Savaļnieks in the 39th minute, missed his penalty kick, while at the other end the home side fired the ball just above
the bar with a long-range shot.
Latvia started the second half by switching to two strikers, when Dario took the field in place of Melnik. He immediately stood out with a lot of activity and obviously gave the team extra energy, however,
but he earned a yellow card in the 50th minute. In the 58th minute of the match, the Latvian team earned its first corner kick, and it immediately bore fruit when won himself a place in front of the goal and opened the
scoring of the match with his second goal.
Latvia failed to maintain the pressure on the home goal, as the match continued to be tense, awkward
but with rare goal-scoring opportunities. In a nervous battle in rainy conditions, Latvia had to devote their efforts to defense.
