Diary

Friday, 14 March 2025, 9.00am - Thomas Tuchel has named his first 26-man squad for next week's World Cup preliminary matches. Aston Villa's on-loan forward Marcus Rashford has earned a recall following his upturn in form since his move in January. He last played for England a year ago. Ajax's Jordan Henderson also returns after a year away from the squad, although he last played in November 2023. Chelsea defender Reece James also returns after two years out, having suffered with multiple injuries. Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze returns after last featuring in the first squad of this season, under Lee Carsley.
Newcastle defender Dan Burn and Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly are the only new players, however, goalkeeper James Trafford  and defender Jarell Quansah remain a part of the set-up.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Lewis Hall, Noni Madueke and Bukayo Saka all miss out through injury. However, from those players named in Carsley's final squad, there are no places for Jarrad Branthwaite, Conor Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes, Jack Grealish. Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Rico Lewis or Ollie Watkins.

Sunday, 16 March 2025 - Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says Cole Palmer is likely to miss England's World Cup qualifying games with a muscular injury. Palmer picked up the injury in training and was ruled out of today's 1-0 defeat at Arsenal. That was the first time they had played without him since April last year, when they were beaten 5-0 by the Gunners. Maresca thinks it is unlikely Palmer will join up with Thomas Tuchel's England squad. "I don't think [he will be fit for England] to be honest," Maresca said after the Arsenal defeat. "His injury is from yesterday's session. It's a muscular problem. He needs a scan and the scan is planned for Monday morning."
Morgan Gibbs-White is drafted into the squad in the evening.

Monday, 17 March 2025 - The squad begin arriving at St. George's Park. Cole Palmer remains with his club for further assessment. The first training session involves the 26 players, plus Adam Wharton from the under-21's.

Tuesday, 18 March 2025 - The afternoon training session at St. George's Park is attended again by all 26 members of the squad, but also, from the under-21 set up, Adam Wharton, Taylor Harwwod-Bellis and Liam Delap. Following the session, it is revealed that after further assessment, Chelsea's Cole Palmer will not be joining up with the squad this week.

Thursday, 20 March 2025 - The England squad relocate to Tottenham Hotspur FC Training Ground in Enfield.

Friday, 21 March 2025 - UEFA rules state that a manager can only select 23 players in his squad for a fixture. Tuchel selected 26 players for the games versus Albania and Latvia, meaning he had to cut three for each game. Morgan Gibbs-White, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale are the three to have missed out for Tuchel's first match in charge. Harry Kane will captain the side, while Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are expected to start in midfield. Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon all pushing to play alongside Kane in attack.

England 2 Albania 0 - New England head coach Thomas Tuchel got his reign under way with a scrappy win over Albania. Tuchel promised to bring back excitement after succeeding Gareth Southgate - but it was in short supply as the Three Lions struggled for fluency against the ultra-cautious visitors on Friday. One player to impress was Arsenal's gifted teenage full-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, who marked a dream debut by scoring the first goal of the German coach's era - sliding home a composed finish from Jude Bellingham's perfect pass after 20 minutes. It made Lewis-Skelly the youngest player to score on his senior England bow - aged 18 years and 176 days - beating Marcus Rashford's previous record, set against Australia in May 2016, by 33 days. Tuchel also gave a first cap to Newcastle defender Dan Burn, 32, and the goal hero from Sunday's Carabao Cup final win against Liverpool was almost on target again at Wembley as he headed against the bar in the first half. Albania posed more of a threat after the break, with Ezri Konsa doing superbly to deny Jasir Asani who was racing in towards keeper Jordan Pickford. But England responded instantly and put the game to bed in the 77th minute, with captain Harry Kane scoring his 70th goal in 104 international appearances from close range to seal a satisfactory opening night for Tuchel.

Sunday, 23 March 2025 - Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from the England squad for Monday's World Cup qualifier against Latvia. The Newcastle winger sustained a hip injury after coming on during Friday's 2-0 win over Albania at Wembley. After the game, manager Thomas Tuchel described the injury as "a bit worrying" and Gordon had a scan on Saturday before returning to his club for further assessment. The 24-year-old was a late substitute for Marcus Rashford against Albania, earning his 10th cap for the Three Lions in what was their opening qualifier for the 2026 World Cup.

Monday, 24 March 2025 - Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento has been left out of England's squad for Monday's World Cup qualifier against Latvia. The 22-year-old was an unused substitute for the 2-0 win against Albania at Wembley on Friday. Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Liverpool defender Jarrel Quansah, who both missed Friday's match, return to the squad while Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon drops out after returning to his club following injury. Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been left out again. "We have to get the process right to find the best group," Tuchel said. "If that means we leave very good and talented players out of the squad this can happen. In the next 16 months it is important we find the right team and not the most talented 26 players. We need to get the team right. We need to get the team spirit right because it's one thing to play qualifiers, it's another thing to play tournament football."

England 3 Latvia 0 - Thomas Tuchel secured a second successive victory as England head coach in their World Cup qualifier against Latvia at Wembley - but it was a slog rather than a thrill ride before they made their superiority count. England, as against Albania in Tuchel's opening game, were frustrated for long periods by the country ranked 140th in the world, before dominance was transformed into goals. Chelsea captain Reece James celebrated his first England start since September 2022 by curling in a superb free-kick from 20 yards seven minutes before half-time. England then struggled to add to the scoreline in the face of Latvia's stubborn resistance until captain Harry Kane turned in his 71st goal in 105 international appearances from Declan Rice's cross after 68 minutes. As Latvia finally ran out of steam and resistance, substitute Eberechi Eze scored his first England goal with a deflected shot 14 minutes from time. In picking up three points, Tuchel became the first England men's manager to win his first two competitive games since Fabio Capello in 2008.
