Diary

Monday, 5 May 2025 - Thomas Tuchel faces a dilemma over releasing his players early next month before the FIFA Club World Cup. The game at the City Ground on 10 June takes place just four days before the club tournament starts in the United States. Players from Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern München, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid could all be selected in Tuchel's squad for the international double-header. Clubs involved in the tournament are eager for the Football Association to release players after the Andorra game but, as things stand, it is understood Tuchel is minded to keep his squad together for the Senegal friendly. The FA is to hold further meetings when its stance regarding Club World Cup players will be confirmed. Tuchel told his players they only have a minimal period working together before next summer's World Cup. Tuchel and the FA's decision over releasing players could impact as many as twelve players. Should all players remain with the England squad, Chelsea could be the worst hit. Teams competing at the Club World Cup are required to arrive no later than three days before their opening tie. Speaking in March, Tuchel hinted towards his reluctance to do favours for club managers saying: "I take care of the players. We take care about the schedule. But it would be the wrong signal to tell players now 'hey, you have tough matches coming up so I rest you now'. We do what's good for us. We monitor them, we are in contact with the clubs, we are in high-level monitoring where the statuses are known and we won't take any unprofessional risks. Because first of all I feel responsible for the players. I don't want the player to be injured. So this is where it is and in the end we take care of ourselves and the clubs take care of themselves, and the main focus is taking care of the players. I experienced it many, many times in clubs that players from South American countries don't even think about dropping one minute because they want to play for their country, they're proud to play for their country. This is also something that we have to understand and accept. I always accepted it as a club manager. I never got involved in line-ups. I never pushed any national coach because I was hoping that my players get picked. I was also hoping that they are proud to play."

Friday, 23 May 2025, 10am - Former Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been recalled to the squad for next months matches. It is his first call-up since his move to Saudi Arabia last summer. Making the last of his six appearances in the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. There are also returns for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher, Noni Madueke, Bakayo Saka and Ollie Watkins, who all receive their first call-up under Tuchel.
There is also a first call-up to the England squad for Chelsea's 25 year old centre back Trevoh Chalobah. However, Manchester City's Phil Foden misses out because of an ankle injury and 'off-field' issues. Marcus Rashford is suffering with a hamstring injury that curtailed his Aston Villa season, and Marc Guéhi, who suffered an eye injury in the Palace's FA Cup final victory last weekend. His Palace team-mate, Adam Wharton, has been called into the under-21 squad, as they pursue European Championship glory, along with Liverpool's Jarell Quansah and Newcastle's Tino Livramento. West Ham's Jarrod Bowen misses out, as does Dominic Solanke and Aaron Ramsdale.

Sunday, 1 June 2025 - The squad arrive in Barcelona for their training camp in Girona. Also included is Manchester City's John Stones, who will spend the next couple of days in camp to continue his rehabilitation from injury. However, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa and Anthony Gordon all arrived later.
Upon arrival, they attend the Formula One motor racing event at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Monday, 2 June 2025 -
England are using heated tents as part of training to replicate the conditions they could experience at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico next year. As part of the training camp the England head coach and the FA performance staff will look at how players cope in the extremely hot and humid conditions they could face at the World Cup. Players will carry out fitness tests inside the tents on exercise bikes, in temperatures they could be expected to face during the tournament, and their recovery will be analysed. Tuchel said he expects his players to "suffer" in the tournament's conditions and he will travel to the Club World Cup this summer in the United States to assess the conditions. "It is important to see matches now in America, and in Miami at three in the afternoon. I will see that. How it looks, and we need to understand how to cool the players down, to drink. What our options are. Let's see because it is after the season, so it will be very similar. The actual experience is for the players, but I have done pre-season there in Orlando and I will be very surprised if we do not suffer. Suffering is one of the headlines for this World Cup." There have been warnings that the temperatures at 14 of the 16 stadiums being used for the 2026 World Cup could exceed 'potentially dangerous levels' during the tournament. In host city Dallas, in an average year more than 80% of June and July days exceed 28C.
