Saturday, 6 September 2025 - Latvia 0 Serbia 1
- The Serbian national football team won this afternoon in Riga against Latvia.
The only goal for Serbia was scored by Dušan Vlahović in the 12th minute. Serbia
are currently in second place in Group K with seven points from three matches,
while Latvia are fourth with four points from four games. Serbia had their first opportunity in the
fifth minute when Luka Jović headed the ball wide of Latvia's goal. The home team had a chance to score two minutes later, but Serbian goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović saved Renars Varslavans' shot.
Serbia took the lead in the 12th minute with Vlahović's goal, following an assist from Aleksandar Katai. Jović scored in the 28th minute, but the goal was ruled out due to Jović being in an offside position.
Serbian player Strahinja Pavlović had an opportunity to score in the 37th minute, but his header was saved by goalkeeper Krisjānis Zvierdiš.
There was no changeat half-time. Serbia had its first chance in the second half
in the 53rd minute, but the Latvian goalkeeper denied Ivan Ilić's shot. The home
players threatened in the 72nd minute, with Petrović clearing the ball to a
corner following a shot from Renars Varslavans. Before the end of the match,
Serbia had another chance to score in the 81st minute, but Vlahović and Pavlović
were unable to beat the Latvian goalkeeper. The Latvian players nearly equalized
in the 90+1 minute when Varslavans hit the post following a scramble in the
Serbian penalty area.
The Latvian police did not allow entry to fans carrying Serbian symbols at the stadium. The police forced fans to remove hoodies and shirts bearing symbols of Serbia in order to enter the venue, and bringing the Serbian flag was also prohibited.
Monday,
8 September 2025 - Serbia have called on "supporters to send out an image to the world that will make us all proud" as they prepare to host England in a World Cup qualifier.
At least 15% of Belgrade's Rajko Mitic Stadium will be closed to home fans as a FIFA punishment for racist chanting in a game against Andorra.
A statement from the FSS said it has been fined more than £600,000 by FIFA and UEFA in the past five years.
The punishments were for "various prohibited items, insults, and discrimination in the stands", it said.
Branko Radujko, the general secretary of the FSS, warned Serbia fans in the match programme before the England game that any transgressions could get them in more trouble.
"We are still under special monitoring of UEFA. Every inappropriate reaction, insult or incident could cost us dearly on our path to the USA, Mexico and Canada, including the possibility of having to play a decisive match with Albania behind closed doors.
That is the reason I sincerely and seriously call on you: let us cheer from the heart but let it be fair. We can be loud but dignified. Let our support be a source of strength, not a risk for the national team."
