Diary
Thursday, 7
May 2026 - From 12th to 14th May and from 19th to 22nd, Fernando Batista, technical director, will have important work spaces with local players before the final
squad is named prior to the friendly matches against Colombia and England. For
Batista, much more important than the playing of these matches, are the days of
work and training, and to be able to observe and evaluate the players and to
continue drawing conclusions for beyond the summer. "We use the 'microcycles' to
build what we want for everything that is coming, not only for the friendlies in
Colombia and the United States, but also our goal, which is the Nations League;
so we want to take advantage of every moment we have with the players to
continue shaping the idea and the path we want," said Batista.
In addition, the Costa Rican coach stresses that the National Team is going through
this process with a clear and competitive idea, where the evaluation of the group will be key without losing sight of the projection towards 2030. In this sense, the constant monitoring of players inside and outside the country takes on great importance:
"We are scouting many games, from local football matches and connecting with players who are performing abroad... and these moments of training will serve us for everything that is to come."
Next week's practices will be held in the mornings at the FCRF-Plycem Sports Complex and players from the teams that no longer have participation in the final phase of the UNAFUT Closing Tournament will be summoned.
Monday, 11 May 2026 -
The 25-man squad for this first microcycle is named by Fernando Batista.
Nineteen of which are under 23 years of age. It brings together prospects from the pre-Olympic team, who in July will face the Central American and Caribbean Games, and are also projected as follow-up players in the Senior Team. the players are scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday at 7.00am at the FCRF Plycem Sports Complex, and training sessions will be from 8.00am to 10.00am.
Friday, 22 May 2026 -
Fernando Batista has named a 28-man provisional squad. Goalkeeper Patrick
Sequeira, midfielder Orlando Galo and strikers Álvaro Zamora, Carlos
Mora, Josimar Alcócer, Manfred Ugalde and Warren Madrigal, come into the squad. Thirteen of which are
23 years old or younger. The coaching staff highlighted the effort and work carried out during the two microcycles, which were used to the maximum to reinforce the intensity that Batista seeks to implement as the basis of his idea of play.
On Monday, the group will begin training on the field in the afternoon; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will have double sessions, and on Saturday and Sunday the training sessions are scheduled for the morning.
At the end of the week, the players who will face the Colombia will be announced at the Nemesio Camacho El Campín stadium.
Tuesday, 26 May 2026 - FCRF release a
statement explaining that Alejandro Bran is no longer part of the squad.
'It was determined that, at this time, the conditions for his continuity within the group are not met.'
They later confirmed that Kenneth Vargas and Warren Madrigal have also ben
excluded.
Wednesday, 27 May 2026 - Costa Rica's
preparations for their upcoming friendlies have been thrown into chaos after
three players, Alejandro Bran, Kenneth Vargas and Warren Madrigal, were dropped
following a shooting incident outside a popular bar in Los Yoses. The incident,
at 1.40am, happened after two groups were escorted out of the venue by security
staff. Witnesses later heard multiple gunshots, and reports claim that Bran's
vehicle was hit several times. The three footballers denied taking part in any
fight or disturbance. But the FCRF have reacted quickly by removing them from
the camp.
Monday, 1 June 2026 - Colombia 3 Costa Rica 1
- Colombia ended its home preparation for the World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Costa Rica at the El Campín stadium in Bogotá, in a match that
also served as an official farewell to the fans.
Colombia managed to open the scoring in the 15th minute. Luis Díaz took a corner kick and Davinson Sánchez
appeared in the area to beat his marker and send the ball into the back of the net. With that advantage, the team gained confidence and began to find better partnerships. That improvement was reflected again on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute, when high pressure allowed the ball to be recovered in the opponent's half. After a sequence of passes, Luis Díaz received
the ball inside the area and finished with precision to make it 2-0. When it seemed that Colombia had the match under control, Costa Rica found
a way through. Aftert 31 minutes, a collective action ended with a cross from the right wing that found spaces behind the Colombian defense. The play ended with Andrés Soto's goal to make it 2-1 and bring life back to the Central American team. For the second half, Lorenzo made
several changes. James Rodríguez, Jhon Arias and Luis Suárez being
introduced. The Colombian captain began to influence the game and ended up being decisive in the action that settled the match.
In the 81st minute, James took a precise long pass that found Luis Suárez. The striker took advantage of his power to win the race and scored with forcefulness to score the final 3-1.
