a seven year-old William, the third of five children, is living at 44
Albert Street, Willington, County Durham, with his father, William, a
coalmine hewer, and his mother Louisa (née Bennett). |

According to the 1911 census,
William is a Coal Mine Putter. Living with his parents, and now the
second oldest of eight children living with them at 11 Albert Street in
Brancepeth Colliery, Willington. This census return reveals that the
family moved to Willington between the births of the fourth and fifth
children, between 1900 and 1901. His army records state that at the
time of his attestation, 19 January 1915, he was living at 17 Victoria
Street in Willington, moving on to 3 Lodge Hall in Gilesgate Moor. He was
demobilised on 15 February 1919. |
First marriage |

Ethel Scaife, at St. Giles' Church, Durham on 23 November 1914 [registered in
Durham, December 1914]. They had one daughter, Edith
Annie (b.8 October 1915). |

William is now a professional footballer (for Notts County FC) and is now
married to EThel and they have two children, Edith Annie and William
Thompson, and they live at 1 Furlong Terrace in The Meadows area of
Nottingham. In June 1922, when he received his war medal, he was

Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Began at
Willington Schools before joining Durham City FC. Member of the Royal
Field Artillery (Tank Corp) during the war. Signed for Leeds
City FC in the 1918-19 close season, only to be released soon afterwards
as City were disbanded. On 16 October 1919, at an auction of City players at the Metropole Hotel in Leeds, Lincoln City FC purchased
Ashurst for
£500, where he went on to play in 24 league appearances. Transferred to Notts County FC for £1000
on 13 June 1920
and made another 200 league appearances. West Bromwich Albion FC paid £3100 for his services
on 25 November 1926 and made a final 22 league appearances, scoring one
goal. Less than two years later,
he joined Newark Town on 24 August 1928, then Brentwood Colliery FC. Retiring at the end of the
1929-30 season. Although he was came out of retirement to play for
Bestwood Colliery FC in 1933. |
