Early in his
career, Baker was a centre-half, representing Lancashire and had trials
for England amateurs in that position. His career began with Marlborough
Old Boys FC of Liverpool, Liverpool Balmoral FC and Northern Nomads FC.
Before WW1, he was on the books at Blackburn Rovers FC and then Preston
North End FC after the war. In 1920, Baker joined Liverpool FC and also
began his decade-long association with Corinthians FC. Before the end of
that year, he had joined Everton FC, played two
league matches, until he joined Chelsea FC in October 1921.
He played in 92 league matches, apparently
scoring once. He returned to Everton in 1926 to
for another eleven league appearances,
and onto Oldham Athletic FC in 1928 for one
last league appearance. |

Won the AAA High
Jumping title six times, 1910, 1912, 1913, 1919, 1920, 1921. Held the UK
record of 6' 5" (1.956m) in 1921, which wasn't broken again until 1946. At
the Northern Counties Championships, Baker won the discus in 1920 (104' 2¼"),
the 120 yard hurdles (18 seconds) in 1921, the high jump from 1911-14,
1919-21. He won the Long Jump (21' 7½") in the 1920 Northern
Olympic Trials. He also won the Welsh Covered Courts doubles at Lawn
Tennis. He was also an international class water polo player. He also
played cricket for Liverpool CC. |

Competed for Great
Britain in the 1912 Stockholm and 1920 Antwerpen Olympic Games. Came sixth
in the High Jump, and eighth in the Triple Jump, in the 1920 games
(after coming 11th in the 1912 High Jump). At the time of his
death, Baker was the oldest ex-England player to die, a record that had
lasted since Henry Wace in 1947, but would only last for 370 days. |

Baker

chemical manufacturers and became a prominent businessman in the Liverpool
area. -
