Benjamin Howard Baker
Birth 13 February 1892 at 4 Worcester Drive, Anfield, Liverpool, Lancashire [registered as Benjamin Howard in West Derby, March 1892].
Baptism 28 March 1892 at St Margaret's Church, Anfield, Liverpool.
 

According to the 1901 census. 'Howard' was the eldest of three children to Benjamin and Louisa (née Harriette), living at 48 Marlborough Road, West Derby in Liverpool.

 

According to the 1911 census, 'Benjamin' was helping his father in his wholesale drugs business.  Still living with parents and now four younger siblings at 48 Marlborough Road.

Marriage to Christiana Francis Fraser at St Anne's Church, Liverpool [registered in West Derby, December 1917].
  According to the 1921 census, Benjamin Howard, who works for disinfectant manufacturers, is now married to Christiana Frances and have one son, also called Benjamin Howard, and with one servant, they live at Glenmaye on Mines Road in Aigburth.
  According to the 1939 register, Benjamin H., a director of a chemical soap manufacturer, and Christina F. are still married and living at 14 Beechwood Road in Liverpool.
Death 10 September 1987 in Warminster, aged 95 years 209 days [registered in Warminster, Wiltshire, September 1987].

Playing Career

Club(s) Early in his career, Baker was a centre-half, representing Lancashire and had trials for England amateurs in that position. His career began with Marlborough Old Boys FC of Liverpool, Liverpool Balmoral FC and Northern Nomads FC. Before WW1, he was on the books at Blackburn Rovers FC and then Preston North End FC after the war. In 1920, Baker joined Liverpool FC and also began his decade-long association with Corinthians FC. Before the end of that year, he had joined Everton FC, played two league matches, until he joined Chelsea FC in October 1921. He played in 92 league matches, apparently scoring once. He returned to Everton in 1926 to for another eleven league appearances, and onto Oldham Athletic FC in 1928 for one last league appearance.

Individual honours Football League (one appearance); FA Charity Shield winners with Amateurs 1925;
Won the AAA High Jumping title six times, 1910, 1912, 1913, 1919, 1920, 1921. Held the UK record of 6' 5" (1.956m) in 1921, which wasn't broken again until 1946. At the Northern Counties Championships, Baker won the discus in 1920 (104' 2¼"), the 120 yard hurdles (18 seconds) in 1921, the high jump from 1911-14, 1919-21. He won the Long Jump (21' 7½") in the 1920 Northern Olympic Trials. He also won the Welsh Covered Courts doubles at Lawn Tennis. He was also an international class water polo player. He also played cricket for Liverpool CC.

Distinctions Competed for Great Britain in the 1912 Stockholm and 1920 Antwerpen Olympic Games. Came sixth in the High Jump, and eighth in the Triple Jump, in the 1920 games (after coming 11th in the 1912 High Jump).
At the time of his death, Baker was the oldest ex-England player to die, a record that had lasted since Henry Wace in 1947, but would only last for 370 days.

Beyond England
