Started his career
with Denaby Rovers FC of the Rawmarsh League, then played with Denaby
United FC for a season. Signed for Derby County FC for £200 in 1 May 1928. He remained with County,
becoming the clu captain, making 327
league appearances, scoring twice, until he retired in 1939 because
of an injured ankle. He did return to the playing field during the war,
when he represented the Physical Training Corps, as well as the Derby
Borough Police. |

During the latter
part of WWII, Barker was coaching the Derby County FC youth side. Following his
retirement from playing, Barker became the manager of Bradford City FC on
22 May 1946, effective from 27 May, it lasted until 4 January 1947, when
his contract was mutually cancelled. He took up a similar appointment at Dundalk FC
on 1 December 1947.
He became the trainer at Oldham Athletic FC from November 1948 until
January 1949. He returned to Derby County FC as manager on 23 November 1953
until his resignation on 22 April 1955. |

He was a tough ex-miner who had
experienced the terror of a pit roof subsidence. During management, he ran
a grocery business. He left the game and Derby, in June 1955, to become a
publican in Nottingham. -
