According to the 1891 census, four year olf William is the eldest of three children, all sons, to Samuel a corn miller, and Sarah Ann (née Thompson), living on Sheffield Lane Top in Shiregreen.

According to the 1901 census, 14 year old William, a pit trammer, now has two more siblings and is now the eldest of five living with their parents at Pismire Hill in Shiregreen. His father is now a joiner/carpenter.

  According to the 1911 census, William, a professional footballer, is boarding with Howard & Elizabeth Parker at 12 Prinsep Road in Hove, with teammates Jack Thomas and Jimmy Smith.

Club(s) Began his career with Thorpe Hesley Parish Church, before being signed by Sheffield United FC, and after just one league appearance, he went on to Brighton & Hove Albion FC in 1908, making 369 Southern League appearances. Joined Castleford Town FC in 1920 and ending his professional career with Worthing FC.
