Began his career
playing schoolboy football in Sunderland. He was playing for Washington
Colliery FC, being transferred in January 1937 to Seaham Colliery FC. It
was from there that Manchester United FC signed him in November 1938. The
outbreak of WW2 saw him join the Durham Light Infantry and guest for
Charlton Athletic FC. He almost joined Stoke City FC on 18 August 1952
after the clubs agreed terms, but Chilton could not decide personal terms.
After 352 league appearances and three goals, he joined
Grimsby Town FC as player-manager in March 1955, retiring from
playing after 63 league matches in October 1956. |

Grimsby Town FC as player-manager in March 1955, retiring from playing in
October 1956 and continuing his role as manager until his resignation on
22 April 1959, leaving as the club fights relegation. Became
the manager at Wigan Athletic FC in May 1960. Scouted for
Hartlepools United FC in 1961-62, stepping up to manager in July 1962
until May 1963. |
