Playing Career

Club(s) Began his early career playing with Wath Wanderers FC before an unsuccessful trial with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in 1961. He returned to Yorkshire to play for Ferrybridge Amateurs. Turned up at Elland Road with his boots and asked for a trial, and consequently signed on as an apprentice in May 1961, initially on the left-wing, before signing professional a year later. Cooper made the left-back position his own in October 1967. After failing to regain his place following a broken left leg in April 1972. On Transfer Deadline Day, 13 March 1975, Cooper turned down Manchester City FC to join Jack Charlton's Middlesbrough FC for a £50,000 transfer fee. Joined Bristol City FC on 18 July 1978 for a £20,000 fee, breaking his leg on his second league appearance. Cooper joined rivals Bristol Rovers FC on 11 June 1979 as player-coach, becoming their manager during 1980-81, leaving on 20 October 1981, before returning to play with Doncaster Rovers FC the following month and then player-manager at Bristol City FC in May 1982, playing mainly as the club's centre-forward, ending his playing career on October 1984.

Joined Bristol Rovers FC as a player-coach on 11 June 1979. However, he was relieved of his coaching duties by his manager Bobby Campbell in October 1979 over a clash of tactics. Campbell was sacked in January 1980, and the Rovers chairman wanted Cooper installed as manager, but instead, he was voted in as assistant manager, that was until taking over the managerial seat on 24 April 1980. He was sacked on 20 October 1981. Returned to management with Bristol City FC on 20 May 1982 until his sacking on 16 March 1988. Took over the reigns of Exeter City FC on 9 May 1988 until his shock resignation on 1 August 1991, only to take over the manager's job at Birmingham City FC on 9 August, where he remained until his resignation on 29 November 1993.
