Profile

  Donald George Revie OBE
Birth 10 July 1927 at 20 Bell Street, Middlesbrough, North Riding of Yorkshire [registered in Middlesbrough, September 1927].
Marriage to Elsie M.L. Duncan [registered in Leicester, December 1949].
Death 26 May 1989, aged 61 years 320 days, in Murrayfield Hospital, Edinburgh, following a long battle with motor neuron disease, cremated on 30 May at Warriston Crematorium, Edinburgh.

Playing Career

Started in school football around Middlesbrough, particularly Newport Boys Club FC and Middlesbrough Swifts FC. A centre/inside-forward, he signed for Leicester City FC in August 1944, scoring 25 league goals in 96 league outings before transferring to Hull City AFC in November 1949 for a £20,000 fee.  Another 76 league appearances followed and another twelve goals followed. Revie moved onto Manchester City FC in October 1951 for £13,000 plus another player (162 league appearances, 37 goals). Joined Sunderland AFC in November 1956 for £23,000 (64 league appearances, fifteen goals).  Joined Leeds United AFC in November 1958 for £14,000, becoming the club's player-manager on 16 March 1961, retiring after 76 league appearances in which he scored another eleven goals, taking his total league goal tally to 100, in May 1963.

Management Career

After initially planning on applying for the vacant AFC Bournemouth managerial position, Revie decided on becoming Leeds United AFC's player-manager in March 1961, retiring from playing in May 1963. He would remain manager at Elland Road until July 1974.

England tenure Appointed 4 July 1974; resigned 11 July 1977.
Other applicants Joe Mercer had apparently refused the job because of his age. Gordon Milne was another contender. However, Revie, the most successful manager in the country at the time, was the only man approached and immediately accepted the position.

Beyond England

Club(s) After unceremoniously ditching the England manager's position in July 1977, he sold his story to the Daily Mail that he has resigned, before the Football Association had received his letter of resignation, Revie went on to become coach of United Arab Emirates, a position held until July 1980. From which he went to coach Al-Nasr from 1980 to 1984, and Egypt's Al-Ahly in 1984-85.
Individual honours Football Association Hall of Fame 2002.
Distinctions Banned from football for 10 years for attempting to deceive the Football Association into buying out his England national team managerial contract when he had secretly accepted the United Arab Emirates national team coaching position, but the ban was overturned in court for bias of the Football Association hearing officer.
