Playing Career


Club(s)
Southgate began his playing career as a midfielder with Crystal Palace FC, whom he signed professional forms on 17 January 1989, becoming club captain. Having played 152 league appearances and scoring fifteen goals, and after the club were relegated from the Premier League, Southgate joined Aston Villa FC, on 1 July 1995 for 2.5 million pounds, where he was converted to a central defence role and again was handed the club captaincy. After 192 Premier League appearances, and seven goals, despite tentative interest from Chelsea FC and Fulham FC, he joined Middlesbrough FC on 11 July 2001 for a £6.5 million transfer fee, new manager Steve McClaren's first signing. Becoming the club captain after Paul Ince's departure. He remained with Boro' until his step-up to player-manager in June 2006. He remained as a player during the 2006-07 season, but did not feature, so did not add to his 160 league appearances for the Teesside club, scoring four goals.

Management Career

Club(s) Southgate stepped up to the position of player-manager, despite not having the relevant UEFA coaching badges, of Middlebrough FC on 7 June 2006, after his manager, Steve McClaren, took the vacant England manager's position. Southgate remained, enduring relegation to the Championship, before finally getting the sack on 20 October 2009, with Boro' in fourth place. In January 2011, Southgate was appointed FA's Head of Elite Development, until July 2012.
He was handed the England U21 management position on 22 August 2013 under Roy Hodgson, and continued as manager under Sam Allardyce. Southgate temporarily took charge of the national side from 27 September 2016.

England tenure Appointed interim manager for four matches on 27 September 2016, following the dismissal of Sam Allardyce. He was the England U21 coach.
Southgate was then interviewed for the position on 21 November 2016, and appointed on a four-year contract on the 30 November.

Backroom Staff Southgate generally kept the staff that Sam Allardyce had brought in. Keeping Sammy Lee as his assistant and Martyn Margetson as his goalkeeping coach. However, Southgate did bring with him from the under-21 set up, his first-team coach, Steve Holland, replacing Craig Shakespeare. Holland replaced Lee as Southgate's assistant on 21 December 2016, after Lee lost his position earlier in the month.
