England Career
England tenure Football Association functionaries, at first its secretary and later its International Committee, had sole responsibility for selecting the England team from the first unofficial match in 1870 through the last match before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. 
First match No. 1, 30 November 1872, Scotland 0 England 0, a friendly match at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow.
Last match No. 226, 24 May 1939, Romania 0 England 2, friendly match at Stadionul ANEF in Bucharest.
Major tournaments The FA declined to join the World Cup Finals 1930, 1934 and 1938;
British Championships from 1882-83 through to 1938-39.
