Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Played schoolboy football
in South Shields, and then junior football in the town. However, during
World War One, Cresswell was based in Scotland, so assisted Greenock
Morton FC, Heart of Midlothian FC and Hibernian FC, as well as Tottenham
Hotspur FC, that was until he was made a Prisoner of War, he was a gunner
in the Royal Field Artillery. When he
returned, he signed with South Shields FC in 1919, before being suspended
after 99 league appearances. On 1 March 1922, Burnley FC had
attempted to buy Cresswell for £6000. The offer unsettled Cresswell
and he fell into disrepute with his management, which resulted in his
suspension. Sunderland AFC, on 3 March 1922, came in for him and spent a
world record transfer fee £5500 for him. He
was appointed club captain in January 1924, and he
made 182 league appearances before
Everton FC bought him on 4 February 1927 for £7000, despite interest
from Chelsea FC in February 1925. He retired from playing
after 290 league appearances, where he scored
his only league goal, in May 1936, after being placed on the free
to transfer list. |

Management
Career |
Club(s) |
Appointed
manager-coach of Port Vale FC on 13 May 1936, despite the application for
a similar position with Chester City FC, he chose the Valiants, a vacancy that lasted until 14
April 1937, when it was announced he would be leaving the club due to the
position he had left the club in. He soon found another vacancy at
Northampton Town FC where he served as team manager from 18 April 1937. On
1 April 1939, it was announced that he would spend the coming season as
the club's secretary-manager. Yet, on 19 September 1939, all contracts
were cancelled and he left. After which, he was enlisted to become a
sergeant-instructor within the joint F.A./army initiative.
However, Cresswell was one of the ten men interviewed for the
Newcastle United FC manager's job in May 1947, the job going to George
Martin. |
