SUICIDE.—On Friday last J. T. Parker, Esq., Coroner, held an inquest, at
the Red Lion inn, Cranford, touching the death of Joseph Garfield, who
committed suicide by throwing himself into a shallow stream of water near
that village, on the previous day.—The jury returned a verdict of 'Suicide
whilst in a state of temporary insanity'." - The Northampton Mercury,

census, Benjamin is the second of four children with their widowed mother, Mary Ann.
They live with the Smith family, Mary's brother, at Spring Gardens in
Higham Ferrers, Wellingborough. His mother is also the housekeeper. |

census, Benjamin, now a clicker, is still one of four children living with
their widowed mother. They now live at Corporation Row in
Highams Ferrers, where Mary's nephews live with them. |

census, Benjamin is a professional footballer, married to Elizabeth, and
has three children, Benjamin, Florence and Edith. They live at 14 Farley
Street in West Bromwich. |

census, Benjamin, now a labourer on the railway, is living with his wife
and three more children, Elizabeth, Edward and Frederick. The census
reveals that another child had died. They live at 39 New Bank Street in
Longsight, Manchester. Ben and
Elizabeth's son, Benjamin married on 6 August 1917 at St. Giles', Ardwick,
address stated as 210 Cowell's Hops and Benjamin is a warehouseman.
Their daughter, Florence Ethel
married James Twigg on 3 April 1920 at St. Mark's, Gorton, address stated
as 24 Prescott Street and Benjamin is a stoker.

According to the 1921 census,
Benjamin, a warehouse hand, still married, but is boarding at 25 Herbert
Street in Newton Heath, with the Hardman family. (His mother died
in spring 1923) Ben and Elizabeth's daughter, Elizabeth, married on 1
August 1925 at St. Clement's, Longsight, address stated as 29 New Bank
Street and Benjamin is a tradesman.
Their son, Albert Edward, married on 30 July 1927 at St. Clement's,
address still 29 New Bank Street and Benjamin is now a foreman. |

According to the 1939 register, Benjamin is now a
retired labourer living with 84 year-old widow, Lily Hardman, a fish
fryer, at 67 Oldham Road in Failsworth. His wife, however, is still at home
at 39 New Bank Street, both are still married, and now with an eighth child, Stanley. |

A date of
1942 had been mentioned by Lamming, with 10
December been filled in by historian Tony Matthews, but there is
no registration to confirm this. However, a registration in
Manchester was found for second quarter 1958, and at the age of 87, his birth can
only be placed as 1871. His last known whereabouts was the 1939
census...in Manchester. |

junior career with Finedon FC, and then Kettering Town FC and then Burton
Wanderers FC in 1893,
before joining West Bromwich Albion FC on 11 May 1896.
Garfield left for Brighton & Hove Albion FC in August 1902, where he remained
until 1905. Afterwhich he was turning out for Tunbridge Wells Rangers FC.
Garfield was later suspended by the Football Association for playing in
Olympia, the suspension was lifted in May 1907. In 1911, he was playing
for White City FC. |
