According to the 1881 census, nine month old Samuel is here the youngest of two sons to Samuel and Esther (née Hibbert), living at 23 Hough Lane in Turton. His father is a cotton lope weaver.

According to the 1891 census, ten year old Samuel is the youngest of four children living now at 7 Holme Street in Turton with their parents. His father is a general labourer.

According to the 1901 census, 20 year old Samuel is a cotton cloth dyer, and the second of four children living with their parents, back on Hough Lane, number 63. His father is now a cotton mill labourer.

Children Sam and Margaret Greenhalgh had three children together. Harry (b.9 November 1904) and Samuel (b.24 January 1907). Another had died before 1911.

According to the 1921 census, Samuel, now a machine labourer, still married, still two sons, now living at 75 Chorley New Road in Halliwell area of Bolton.
His father died in early 1927.
  According to the 1939 register, Samuel is now a Corporation street sweeper, and with his wife, Margaret, they live at 153 Mornington Road in Bolton.

"Sam Greenhalgh, former Bolton Wanderers and Aston Villa half-back, died to-day at his Bolton home at the age of 74. A native of Eagley, near Bolton, Greenhalgh played five times for the Football League and was twice reserve for England."

Playing Career

Club(s) Spent his youth career with Birtenshaw Wesleyans FC, Eagley United FC and Turton FC. Joined Bolton Wanderers FC in 1902 and made 96 league appearances, scoring six goals. Joined Aston Villa FC in January 1906 and made 46 league appearances, scoring twice. Returned to Bolton Wanderers FC in 1907, becoming club captain, and made a final 163 league appearances, scoring thirteen goals. He signed on 22 July 1914 to become a player~coach at Chorley FC.
