  Ernest William Hine
Birth 9 April 1901 in Hoyle Mill, Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire [registered in Barnsley, June 1901]. Grew up in Smithy Cross.
 

According to the 1901 census, Ernest is the only child to John and Hannah Rebekah (née Hodgkiss) He does not appear on the census return, which was made on 31 March 1901. The Hines' live at Armin Street in Hoyle Mill, Barnsley. His father is a colliery lampman and the census return describes him as a 'cripple'.

 

According to the 1911 census, Ernest is now the eldest of five children, and remains with his parents, his father is a lampman. They live at
13 Smithy Green, in Smithies, an area of Barnsley. The census return reveals that his parents had six children and that one had tragically died.

Marriage to May Pretoria Parker [registered in Barnsley, December 1919]. They had four children, Robert (1920), Ernest W. (b.4 April 1921), Rosemary (1926), Edward (b.5 July 1929).
 

According to the 1921 census, Ernest is an underground drayman at the mines, and is married to May Pretoria, and with one son, Ernest William, they live at 4 Wood View in Monk Bretton.
According to Passenger Lists, Ernest Hine was one of eighteen footballers on an FA Tour, courtesy of Canadian Pacific Railway Company, had left the port of Liverpool on 11 May 1931, bound for Montreal, Canada, on the Duchess of Richmond. They returned from Quebec, arriving at Southampton on 23 July 1931, on board the Empress of Britain. He was living at 4 Newhills Road, in Smithies, Barnsley.

  According to the 1939 register, Ernest is a general labourer and is married to May P. They live at 9 Wakefield Road in the Smithy Wood area of Barnsley.
Death 15 April 1974 in Monk Bretton, aged 73 years 6 days [registered in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, June 1974]. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Monk Bretton cemetery

Playing Career

Club(s) Began his football career in the Barnsley Nelson League with Staincross Station FC. After scoring five hattricks amongst his 66 goals, joined the local league side, Barnsley FC, ahead of other league clubs, on 8 April 1921. Following 82 goals in 164 league appearances, Leicester City FC signed Hines for a £3000 transfer fee on 2 January 1926, where he scored another 148 goals in 247 league outings, becoming club captain. Huddersfield Town AFC signed him on 13 May 1932, making 23 league appearances and scoring just four goals. Manchester United FC signed him for a £5000 transfer fee on 10 February 1933, and despite being placed on the transfer list just three months after signing and becoming club captain for the 1933-34 season, he made another 51 league appearances, scoring twelve goals. Returned to Barnsley FC on 6 December 1934, after scoring another 42 goals in 127 league appearances, after again, becoming the club captain. He was also appointed coach of the reserve team competing in the Midland League, on 6 December 1937. On 15 April 1939, Hines was placed on 'the free transfer list', however, on 8 May, Hine hung up his boots as his club retained him as a coach.
