Club Career

Club(s) Howey started his football career with rivals Newcastle United FC, whom he signed for from being a trainee on 11 December 1989 (191 league matches, scoring six). Signed for Manchester City FC on 11 August 2000 for £2 million fee plus a player (94 league matches, scoring eleven). Signed for Leicester City FC on 4 July 2003 for £300,000 (thirteen league matches, scoring once). Released on a free transfer to Bolton Wanderers FC 30 January 2004, playing in just three Premier League matches. He left the Reebok Stadium on 17 May 2004.  After being freed, he then joined New England Revolution of the MLS for three matches in summer 2004.  Finally, he returned to England to train with Oldham Athletic FC before making one substitute league appearance for Hartlepool United FC after signing on 24 March 2005. He retired on 31 May 2005.

Beyond England

After Howey retired as a player, he became Manager of Crook Town FC in September 2006, but resigned just two months later. He returned as Youth Team Coach at Middlesbrough FC before becoming player-coach with Bishop Auckland of the National League.  He presents Total Sport on BBC Radio Newcastle and became a coach at East Durham College Football Development Centre in 2007 and becoming Head Coach in 2010. - Various Media
