Played
juinor football in Sunderland before signing apprentice forms with rivals
Newcastle United FC in July 1971, turning professional in September 1972.
After 158 league appearances at left-back, scoring nine times, he
was bought by Liverpool FC to solve their left-back problem following the

1978, and he would go on to play 251 times in the league, scoring

when Sunderland AFC paid 100,000 pounds for his services. He played in
54 league matches, scoring twice. After two seasons at Sunderland,
Kennedy moved to Hartlepool United FC (five league appearances)
before heading to Europe to have spells at Husqvarna, K. Beerschot
V.A.C. and Club 1903. He returned to England where he turned out for
non-league Northwich Victoria FC (one league appearance)
and Grantham FC (three league appearances). He had a
spell with Wigan Athletic FC (22 league appearances),
then to Colne Dynamoes FC (16 league appearances), and
