Kidd started playing for schools in the
Manchester area before signing apprentice forms with Manchester United FC
in August 1964, turning professional in June 1966. 52 goals in
203 league appearances followed, but after United's relegation, he
transferred to Arsenal FC for 110,000 pounds in July 1974, he scored
another thirty goals in 77 league appearances. Manchester City FC
signed him in July 1976 for 100,000 pounds, and
made 98 league appearances, scoring 44 goals. Everton FC were next to gain his services for 150,000
pounds in
March 1979, and they got a return of twelve goals in forty league
appearances before being sold to Bolton Wanderers FC in May 1980
for 110,000 pounds, where he played 43 league appearances,
scoring thirteen goals, he was
loaned to the NASL side Atlanta Chiefs in 1981, making 29 appearances,
and scored 23 goals. Kidd left Bolton in January 1982 to return to the NASL
and Fort Lauderdale Strikers for 51 appearances, and 34 goals,
and Minnesota Strikers in 1984 for thirteen appearances, scoring
eight goals.
He finally retired as a player in 1984.

Kidd began management at
Barrow AFC and then as assistant manager with Swindon Town FC in April
1985 and the same position at Preston North End FC later in 1985, he soon
became the club's caretaker manager in November 1985, before accepting the
role full-time in January 1986, it lasted until March 1986, after which he
was involved in coaching young players before becoming Manchester United
FC's youth team coach in 1988, Kidd was promoted to the role of assistant
manager in 1991. He left to take charge at Blackburn Rovers FC in December
1998 and dismissed on 3 November 1999 with Rovers. Kidd moved to Leeds
United AFC in May 2000 as youth coach and as Head Coach in March 2001.
Meanwhile, Kidd was named as assistant to England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson on 22 January 2003. He left Leeds in May 2003 and the England
set-up in May 2004 to battle illness. After recovery, in September
2006, he accepted an offer to work as assistant to, firstly, Neil Warnock,
and then Bryan Robson, at Sheffield United FC. He left in February 2008.
On 11 February 2009, Kidd was appointed as the assistant manager at
Portsmouth FC. He remained until August. Kidd then became Technical
Development Manager at Manchester City FC in September 2009, before becoming assistant manager on 19 December
2009.
