Club(s) |
After training with Coventry City FC and Leicester City FC. Kirkland had
an unsuccessful trial with Blackburn Rovers FC and so signed as a Coventry City FC trainee, before
signing professionally on 2 July 1998. After
24 league appearances, he signed for Liverpool
FC, 31 August 2001 for £6 million, a record fee at that time for a
goalkeeper. Injuries and a loss of form saw him being loaned to West Bromwich Albion FC on 27 June 2005 for the 2005-06
season, returning on 8 May 2006 after ten league
appearances. Having been fourth-choice keeper at Liverpool and
only 25 league appearances, Kirkland
went out on another season-long loan, this time to Wigan Athletic FC on 11 July
2006, but signed a permanent deal after nine
league matches, on 27
October 2006. Despite a return to form early in his latics' career,
Kirkland suffered heavy defeats and a dislocated finger, he lost his place
and was sent out on loan on 25 November 2010 to Leicester City FC, he
made only three league appearances. On
12 October 2011, he went to Doncaster Rovers FC on loan, but returned
after a single league match after suffering yet another injury. Throughout his loan spells, Kirkland had achieved another 122 league
apparances since signing permanently with Wigan. On 23 May 2012, Kirkland
joined Sheffield Wednesday FC. |

In April 2008 Kirkland teamed up with fellow professionals
Kevin Davies and Brett Emerton to help launch the
Get Started programme, a national
scheme which aims to tackle re-offending. He visited Hindley Youth
Offenders' Institution in support of the scheme, which is delivered by the
Prince's Trust in partnership with the Premier League, the PFA and the
Football Foundation |
