Club Career
Club(s) Played with South Emsall Schools and even became part of the groundstaff at Manchester United FC for a season whilst having a trial. Played with Hemsworth FC and had a trial with Blackpool FC. Joined Monkton Colliery FC, whilst trialling with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, before signing amateur contract with Middlesbrough FC, turning professional in October of that year. After 39 league appearances and one goal, he joined Tottenham Hotspur FC in May 1964 for 42,500 pounds, he retired through a persistent knee injury in May 1976 after 402 league appearances and 15 goals.

Managerial Career
Club(s) Shortly after leaving Spurs, he became manager of Hertford Town FC in the summer of 1976 for a brief period. He returned to Yorkshire in 1977 scouting for Tottenham Hotspur FC, becoming Doncaster Rovers FC coach from 1977 to 1981. After which he joined Middlesbrough FC in 1981 as reserve team coach, becoming first team coach in February 1982. Became manager of Darlington FC in May 1983 until March 1987. Took up the same post with Torquay United from June 1987, resigning in October 1989. Became manager of Hartlepool United FC in December 1989, a post he had until illness took over in February 1991.
