According to the 1881 census, Arthur, himself now a malster, is the oldest of two children living at home with their widowed mother at 40 Church Street in Barnsley, with a single servant.

Marriage to Annie Augusta Parkin, on Friday, 7 January 1887 at St. Mary's Church in Barnsley [registered in Barnsley, March 1887], one son, Alfred Norman (b.18 November 1887)
 

According to the 1891 census, Arthur, still a malster, is living with his son, Alfred, on Kensington Road in Barnsley, and a single servant.
