Club Career

Club(s) Crewe Alexandra FC trainee, signed professionally on 21 March 1994. He scored on his debut as a sixteen year-old, going on to play 132 league appearances, scoring 27 times for The Alex. Murphy signed for Liverpool FC for £1½m. on 17 July 1997, and played once in the Premier League before being loaned back to Crewe Alexandra FC on 12 February 1999, a further sixteen league appearances and a single goal helped save The Alex from relegation from the First Division. He returned to Anfield to score 25 goals in 170 Premier League appearances before he signed for Charlton Athletic FC on 10 August 2004 for £2½m. Another 56 Premier League appearances followed, with seven goals. Moved onto Tottenham Hotspur FC on transfer deadline day, 31 January 2006, for £2m., but only scored twice in 23 Premier League appearances. He joined Fulham FC for an undisclosed fee on transfer deadline day, 31 August 2007. He played in 169 Premier League appearances, scoring seventeen, before dropping a division to join Blackburn Rovers FC on 25 June 2012.

Twelve days before the squad deadline, on 9 May 2002, Sven-Göran Eriksson picked a provisional 23-man squad for the World Cup Finals that excluded Danny Murphy, who was on standby. Two days later, Gerrard (groin) picked up an injury. The squad then travelled to Dubai on 13 May, with Danny Murphy deputising for his club mate. When Eriksson submitted his final squad list on 21 May with Murphy included. Murphy then fell awkwardly in training, breaking his foot, and his World Cup place went to Trevor Sinclair.
