"Joe Payne, a
practically unknown player, scored ten goals for Luton Town, who beat
Bristol Rovers 12-nil, and so set up a new individual goalscoring record
for the English Football League. Originally, Payne, was credited with nine
goals, but after the match, the referee said that Luton's sixth goal,
which had been given to Martin, belonged to Payne, as the ball was already
over the line when Martin charged the goalkeeper. In this way, Payne
surpassed the feat of R. Bell, now of Everton, who only last Boxing Day
(1935), scored nine goals for Tranmere Rovers in their 13-4 win over
Oldham Athletic. It was Payne's fourth appearance in first class
football." |
