Birth 3 January 1896 at Clatford Lodge, Upper Clatford, Andover, Hampshire [registered in Andover, March 1896].
 

According to the 1901 census, William is the second of two children to William and Jane (née Barlow), living at Clatford Lodge in Upper Clatford. His father is a domestic coachman.

 

According to the 1911 census, William is an assistant grocer, now with a younger sister. Although the census reveals that he is one of four children. His father is now a publican and they live at The Elephant Inn, 56 New Street in Andover.

According to the 1921 census, William is now a professional footballer (for Southampton FC) and is newly married to Ethel. They live at 65 Denzil Avenue in Southampton.
According to Passenger Lists, William E. was part of the FA Tour that left Southampton bound for Quebec, Canada on 15 May 1926 on board the Empress of Scotland, they returned to Liverpool on 23 July 1926 on board the Montroyal. His address is stated as 1 Southcliffe Road in Southampton.

  According to the 1939 register, William E., a hotel proprietor, and Ethel M. remain married and living at 51 Northam Road in Southampton.
Death 25 September 1972 in Chandler's Ford, aged 76 years 266 days [registered in Winchester, September 1972].

Playing Career

Club(s) Began his football career with Andover FC, and carried on playing football when he was in the army. Joined Southampton FC as an amateur in 1918, turning professional in May 1919. After scoring 175 goals in 327 league appearances, he joined Manchester United FC on transfer deadline day, 16 March 1928 and made 35 league appearances, scoring nineteen goals. Signed for Port Vale FC on 8 November 1929, and remained for less than a year, scoring just twice in five league appearances.

The Glebe Hotel was renamed the New Victoria, and then the King Alfred public house
(left) and possibly even known as the Gaol House. It eventually closed altogether in 2013.
