admission record for Pirton School, Freddie started school on 18 April
1898. He left on 31 March 1903.
According to the 1901 census, Freddie is the youngest of five
children to George and Emma Selina (née Cherry). They live at Burge End in
Pirton. |

According to the 1911 census,
Fred, a general labourer, is living with his widowed father and three of
his older siblings at Church Baulk in Pirton, his mother had died in 1909.
The census reveals that he is one of eight children, all still alive. |

According to the 1921 census,
Frederick is now a professional footballer (for Southampton FC) and lives
with his older sister, Peggy and her husband and children, at Great Green
in Pirton. |

Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Began his playing career in 1914-15 with Pirton United
FC in the Luton Alliance. Played with Hitchin Town FC before joining the
army, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery, The Labour Corps and The
Lancashire Fusiliers, playing football for his battalion team while in
France. Returned from serving alongside
Bert Lee,
who recommended him to play for Southampton FC.
He made 210 league appearances, eventually becoming captain.
Moving to Plymouth Argyle FC on 12 February 1926, again
becoming club captain until he retired in 1932
after completing another 166 league appearances. Played with St.
Austell Seniors FC during 1935 and 1937. |

Beyond England |
After
retiring, he assisted St. Austell FC as a part-time professional, before
becoming a licensee/newsagents in Plymouth. He left a position in Truro as
a secondary school coach, to become the very first tenant
of The Cherry Tree Inn, Ham Lane, Pennycross on the Plympton-Plymouth
border from January 1938 (left in 2012).
His coaching position went to
Fred Fox. He was also appointed Argyle's scout in November 1938. -
