Began his
career as a centre-half in his schoolboy days. Turned to goalkeepeing in
the Doncaster Senior League for Thorne Colliery FC. He had
unsuccessful trials with Bradford FC and Hull City AFC in November 1928.
But it was Everton FC, after two trials with the Central League side
(the first against Stockport County FC on 9 March, the second against
Manchester United FC on 16 March 1929), that signed him on 21
March, for a small 'consideration fee' in the September. He appeared for
the Royal Corps divisional teams during the war. On 6 May 1950, Sagar was
chosen to play against Manchester City FC, the last game of the season,
his 430th league appearance, thus breaking the record held by Liverpool
FC's Elisha Scott (His previous league appearance came the
previous Christmas). With it came his retirement, however, he was
retained and after a record number of 466 league appearances,
on 1 May 1953, Everton FC appointed him to their training staff
instead of retaining him as a player. On 12 August that year, he was
awarded with a £1000 cheque for his 24 years of unbroken service, as well
as receiving three benefits throughout his career. |
