There are two
Thomas Smart's born in the latter half of 1896 in the Dudley registration
district. One, born 20 September, the other on 7 August. The former
remained in Rowley Regis, the latter was found to be in Brierley Hill.
They both died within two years of each other. |

According to the
1901 census, Thomas is the second of three children and the only son to
Joseph and Maria (née Siviter), living at his grandparents home at 25
Halesowen Street in Blackheath area of Rowley Regis. His father is a boat
loader at the local docks. |

According to the 1911
census, Thomas, a blower in the glassworks, is now the second of seven
children at home with their parents. His father is now a bricklayer at the
same glassworks. They now live at 37 Halesowen Street. According to
his army records enlistment on 5 January 1915, Smart was a pipe welder
still at 37 Halesowen Street. He was discharged 28 May 1916. |

1921 census, Thomas, a professional footballer (for Aston Villa FC), is
now married to Mabel and with one daughter, Annie, they live with his
brother-in-law's family at 47 Halesowen Street in Blackheath. |

According to the 1939 register, Thomas, a general labourer in the bacon
factory, is married to Mabel, and living at 9 Birmingham Road in
Blackheath, with a daughter, Annie Gwendoline. The other Thomas,
born 7 August, is a foreman at the road stone quarry, and is married to
Cissie and they live at 54 Church Street in Brierley Hill. |

Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Began his junior career with Blackheath Town FC before being
enlisted with the South Stafford Regiment in 1915 and also served with
Field Artillery, where he also played his football. Joined Halesowen Town
AFC when the war ended. Moving on to Aston Villa FC in January 1920 for a
three hundred pound transfer fee. He retired after 405 league
appearances and eight goals, in 1934, but was soon assisting
Brierley Hill Alliance FC. |
