Birth 10 April 1890 at 8a Belper Row, Darby End, Netherton, Dudley, Worcestershire [registered in Dudley, June 1890].
notes: only parts of Dudley was part of the Staffordshire registration until 1912
 

According to the 1891 census, Joseph is an eleven month old baby, the youngest of two sons to Joseph and Lois, the other being Hezekiah. They live at 8a Belper Row in Netherton area of Dudley. His father is a coal miner.

 

According to the 1901 census, Joseph and Hezekiah are still at Belper Row with their parents, but now with four more siblings (three sisters and a brother). His father remains at the mines, as a loader 'above ground'.

 

According to the 1911 census, Joseph is a professional footballer living with his widowed mother, his older brother, Hezekiah, and six of his younger siblings, Alice, Laura, George, Lois, William and Horace. The census reveals that Joe was one of nine children and that one had died. They live at 25 Oak Street in Netherton.

Marriage to Florrie Brookes. at Cradley Heath, 20 April 1914 [registered in Dudley, June 1914].
  According to the 1921 census, Joseph is still a professional footballer (with West Bromwich Albion FC), and is now married Florence. They live at Turn Pike Cottage in Danesford.
  According to the 1939 register, Joseph, a chain marker at a public proving house, and Florrie are married, living at Manora, on Buffery Road in Dudley.
Death 9 June 1956 in Wolverhampton, aged 66 years 60 days [registered in Wolverhampton, June 1956].

Playing Career

Club(s) Began his career with local junior club Netherton St. Andrew's FC and then Darby End Victoria FC. Stepped up the league ladder to play with Cradley Heath St. Luke's FC, from where he was spotted by West Bromwich Albion FC in May 1910. Made 434 league appearances, before being allowed to join Birmingham FC in May 1926, where he made another 48 league outings. Worcester City FC signed him to make him their player-manager in May 1929, until 1932.
