According to the 1861 census, Herbert Spry is the youngest of seven children to Frederic and Caroline (née Helps) and they live at Elmore House with three servants. His father is a solicitor.


According to the 1871 census, Herbert S. is still the youngest of the seven children, and with parents, they all still live at Elmore House. There are four servants and eleven pupils.

first marriage to Maude Allen Wintle, on Monday, 12 December 1881 at Fatehgadh, Gujarat [registered in London, December 1887].

second marriage to Caroline Isabel Kelps, on Monday, 21 November 1892 in Bombay [registered in St.George Hanover Square, December 1887]. One daughter, Carrie Francis

 Kelly's Directory of Berkshire states that by 1899, and until at least 1903, Herbert was living at Red Lodge in Newbury.
According to
the 1901 census, Herbert S. is still married to Caroline A. They have one daughter, Carrie F., and along with three servants, are living at Red Lodge in Cold Ash, Newbury. Herbert is a District Highways Surveyor.


According to the 1911 census, Herbert Spry is still married to Caroline Isabel, and with two servants they still live at Red Lodge. Herbert is a pensioned civil engineer.
Berkshire Electoral Records state Herbert was at Red Lodge until at least 1915.
Kelly's Directory of Somerset states that by 1923, Herbert was living at Openfield in Bath.
