According to the 1901
census, Tom is the third of five children, all sons, to John George and
Ann (née Smith). His father is a rope inspector at the Ryhope Colliery.
They live at 7 South View in the Ryhope area of Sunderland. |

According to the 1911
census, Tom, an engine fitter at the colliery, is still the third of five
children, but he has a younger sister. In fact, the census tragically
reveals that his mother had ten children, and five had since died. The
family of seven live at 39 Eglinton Street in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland.
His father is a winding engine man in the colliery. |

According to the 1921 census,
Tom is now a professional footballer (for Middlesbrough FC) and is the
oldest of the three children still living at home with their parents still
at 39 Eglinton Street.

Gray, on 5 September 1925
[registered in Stockton-on-Tees, September 1925]. Daughter
of James Gray, an amateur footballer. They had one son, David
(b.8 February 1927) |

According to Passenger Lists, Tom Urwin was one of eighteen footballers on an FA Tour, courtesy of Canadian Pacific Railway Company, had left the port of Liverpool on 11 May 1931, bound for Montreal, Canada, on the Duchess of Richmond. They returned from Quebec, arriving at Southampton on 23 July 1931, on board the Empress of Britain.
He was living at 7 Abingdon Street in Sunderland. |

According to the 1939 register, Tom, a football trainer and masseuse, is
now married to Bertha and they are living at 37 Hawarden Crescent in
Sunderland, along with their son, David. |

Playing Career |

Played
schoolboy football in Sunderland, and spent his junior playing days in the
Sunderland Nonconformist League, playing with Fulwell FC. Afterwards, he
was playing with Lambton Star FC. Joined Shildon FC as an amateur in 1913.
He signed professional forms in February 1914. Afterwhich Middlesbrough
signed him in the May. After spending a decade with the Teesside club, for
a £3200 transfer fee, he joined Tyneside club, Newcastle United FC
on 11 August 1924. Urwin was offerd terms with 'Boro, but these were
rejected.
Urwin complete the three rivers when he joined the Wearside club,
Sunderland AFC on 7 February 1930, for a £525 transfer fee. He retired
in 1936. |
