According to the 1891 census, Charles is the eldest of two sons, the other being Anthony, and a younger sister, Violet, to William James and Isabella (née Thompson). They live at 23 Picton Street in Bishop Wearmouth. His father is a riveter.

 

According to the 1901 census, Charley W., an apprentice joiner, has three more siblings, now living at 28 North Hedley Street in the Deptford area of Sunderland with their parents. His father remains as a riveter.
According to Trade Union membership registers, Charlie became a paid-up member of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters & Joiners on 5 March 1901.

Marriage to Edith Helen Wheeler, on Saturday, 12 June 1909 at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill in Norwood, London. Charles was living at 118 Gipsy Hill at the time, Edith at 63 Clive Road.

At the time of Norman's baptism, 23 March 1910, they are living at 89 Davey Road, and Charlie is a professional footballer.
According to the 1911 census, Charles William is a professional footballer, married to Edith Helen, with one son, Norman. They live at 89 Davey Road in the Handsworth area of Birmingham.
His father died in Thornley, 3 April 1913.
At the time of his attestation, 10 December 1915, to the Royal Garrison Artillery, Charles, stating himself as a professional footballer, is still living at 89 Davey Road. He is hospitalised in Southern General Hospital in Birmingham between 31 December 1918 and 10 March 1919 (possibly suffering with a hospital bug). He is demobilised eight days later.

According to the 1921 census, Charles William, still a professional footballer (for Oldham Athletic FC), and still married and still living at 89 Davey Road with their only son.
The West Midlands Electoral Rolls state that the Williams family lived at 89 Davey Road until at least 1925.

According to the 1939 register, Charles W., a maintenance worker at Villa Park, and Edith Helen, are still married, living at 241 Highbridge Road in Sutton Coldfield, along with their son.

Playing Career


Club(s)
Played schoolboy football in Sunderland before joining Southwick FC, from where he joined the newly formed Crystal Palace FC in 1905. After 56 Southern League appearances and thirteen goals, he signed for Aston Villa FC in May 1907. Oldham Athletic FC signed Wallace in May 1921, where he played until he retired in 1923.
