Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Started his career with Diss Town FC, of the Anglian Combination
League. Signed by Bobby Robson's Ipswich Town FC in May 1969, and
made his debut in the next year. He was suspended and transfer
listed in June 1977 after failing to embark on a Town tour of the
United States. West Ham United FC made an unsuccessful bid for him.
Then, after regaining his place, he lost his place through injury
during the early part of 1978. Newcastle United FC had a bid turned
down for him in the summer of 1978 and then Southampton FC bid £150,000
to take Whymark in November, but he instead chose to join join
NASL side Vancouver Whitecaps for £155,000 on a three-year
contract, effective when the season starts the following February.
Spent his first NASL break with Sparta Rotterdam, whom he signed on
loan with on 9 October 1979. Whymark had agreed to join Norwich City
FC on 27 July on loan for a £25,000 fee, but by the time the NASL
season ended, City had already filled their allotment of loan
players. Joined Derby County FC, also on loan, on 19 December 1979,
after he felt homesick, but
illness affected his fitness. before returning to England and turning out for lower league clubs.
Grimsby Town FC paid a record fee £80,000 for Whymark on 30
November 1980, where he also became a player~coach.
Joined Southend United FC for £12,000 on 8 December 1983. However, without a fee getting paid, Grimsby recalled him as they were having an injury crisis.
He did join them on 4 January 1984. Peterborough United FC signed
Whymark on a weekly contract in 1985 summer, until Colchester United
FC took the much-travelled striker in early Novemberm when he also
applied for the vacant manager's job at Dagenham FC. |
