* The friendly away match of 17 May
1953 against Argentina, abandoned midway through the first half because of
torrential rain with both teams scoreless, is treated differently.
Although the teams played for only
21 minutes, the football
associations of England and Argentina agreed the match would stand as a
scoreless draw. Since the Football Association records list the 1953 Argentina match as a draw, we have bowed to their official status although we believe it would have been more accurate to record it for what
it was, an abandonment. Accordingly, we have recorded the match as a scoreless
draw and counted it in making
our team record computations.
The friendly away match of
15 February 1995 against the Republic of Ireland, abandoned after 27
minutes because of crowd violence with the Republic leading 1-0, did not
produce an official result. The Football Association's official
website has only recently made mention of the match in its matches list
although caps were awarded to England's players. We have chosen to
record it in our matches list because caps were awarded.
Accordingly, we have recorded the match as a scoreless draw and counted it
in making our team record computations.
