Notes

Only fourteen men have kept goal for England in the fifteen World Cup final tournaments in which England have played, and three of these, Peter Bonetti, David James and Ben Foster, were mid-tournament replacements.

Bonetti took over in goal for the 3-2 extra-time quarter-final loss to West Germany that sent England home from the 1970 tournament.  That was the first occasion on which England's first-choice goalkeeper failed to play every minute of every match at a World Cup final tournament.

David James, although given the number one jersey, came into the 2010 Finals tournament as second choice to Rob Green.  His World Cup Finals debut ended disastrously after he let the ball slip through his hands, giving United States a vital equalising goal.  James then played the remaining Group matches, and then the round-of-16 match.

Ben Foster played in the final 2014 tournament group match after England had already been eliminated.

Only one keeper, Shilton, played at three final tournaments.  Two, Banks and Seaman, played at two tournaments.  Seaman was on the squads for three tournaments, but did not play at the first in 1990.  The remaining ten goalkeepers played at only one tournament.  David James was in the squad for three tournaments, but only played in his third, in 2010.  Ron Springett, Bonetti and Joe Hart were on the squads for two tournaments, but Springett did not play at his second tournament in 1966, Bonetti, who, as noted above, made only one appearance at the 1970 tournament, did not play at his first tournament in 1966. Hart also did not play in his first tournament in 2010, but was number one four years later.
